Typosquatters have covered almost 80% of the typos of big traffic websites like Facebook, Google, Twitter, Microsoft and Apple

What is Typosquatting ?

Typosquatting is the practice of registering a domain name that’s slightly different from that of a heavily trafficked site in the hope of catching some accidental traffic

Sophos looked at typosquatting targeting its own website and those of Facebook, Google, Twitter, Microsoft and Apple. The study looked for registered websites for every single one letter typo of the company name: one letter omitted (eg Sopos), one letter mistyped (eg Sphos), or one letter added (Ssophos).

The results showed that for popular services, virtually every example has been registered as an active site. For Apple, 86 per cent of typosquatting variants had been taken, and Google (83 per cent) and Facebook (81 per cent) weren’t far behind.

The bad news was that 2.7% of the URLs fell into the ‘cybercrime’ category (which includes hacking, phishing, online fraud and spamming), another 2.4% were adult or dating sites, and 15% fell into the ‘ads and popups’ classification.

Particularly nasty were the bait-and-switch operations. Sophos found one particular company has 22% of the one-character-away-from-apple.com sites, redirecting them to an “Apple-like page” offering iTunes 10 for download. But clicking the download button takes you to mp3helpdesk site which offers “unlimited downloads for just 0.99 a month”.

The University of Kansas is buying up website names such as www.KUgirls.xxx and www.KUnurses.xxx. But not because it’s planning a Hot Babes or X-rated gallery of the Nude Girls of Kansas.

Instead, the university and countless other schools and businesses are rushing to prevent their good names from falling into the hands of the pornography industry. Over the past two months, they have snapped up tens of thousands of “.xxx” website names that could be exploited by the adult entertainment business. “Down the road there’s no way we can predict what some unscrupulous entrepreneur might come up with,” said Paul Vander Tuig, trademark licensing director at the Lawrence, Kansas, school. The university spent nearly $3,000 in all. It plans to sit on the .xxx names and do nothing with them. The brand-new .xxx suffix is an adults-only variation on .com. The .xxx name went on sale to the public for the first time this week, promoted as a way to enable porn sites to distinguish themselves and a means of making it easier for internet filters to screen out things parents don’t want their children to see. ICM Registry of Palm Beach, Florida, is the exclusive manager of the .xxx names and sells them through a dozen middleman companies such as GoDaddy.com for an average of $100 a year. Indiana University spokesman Mark Land said the school spent $2,200 to buy www.hoosiers.xxx and 10 other such names. Other Indiana schools took the same step, including Purdue University and Ball State University. “This is just a modest cost of doing business in the world we live in,” Land said. ICM sold .xxx names for the past two months exclusively to companies and others that wanted to protect their brands from the porn industry. During the so-called sunrise sale, ICM registered nearly 80,000 names, said chairman and CEO Stuart Lawley. A search of ICM’s database finds prominent brand names – including Nike.xxx, Pepsi.xxx and Target.xxx – among those purchased. “Target has applied to block a number of the .xxx domains that correspond with our registered trademarks,” said Lee Henderson, a spokesman for the Minneapolis-based store chain. He added, dryly: “We do not plan to use the domains.” The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, which the US government established in 1998 to run the internet’s address system, authorized creation of .xxx earlier this year. The strongest opposition to the suffix has come from the adult entertainment industry. The Free Speech Coalition, the industry’s trade group, lobbied against its creation, complaining among other things about the registration fees. Allison Vivas, president and CEO of Pink Visual Productions, an adult website operator in Van Nuys, California, said her company and others like it were also given the chance to buy up .xxx sites matching their existing .com addresses, but Vivas and many others opted not to. Vivas said she doesn’t think her company – or any organization, adult-oriented or not – should have to pay to protect its trademarks. Otherwise, “it kind of becomes extortion.” Lawley said ICM will take steps to protect existing trademarks even if companies or schools fail to lock down certain website names.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) finally approved a new top-level domain (TLD) for domain names ending in .xxx.

Hereafter URLs ending in .xxx will contain sexually oriented adult entertainment content that is verified to be neither fraudulent nor illegal. We also believe sales of .xxx domains should begin soon in Q2 2011. Here I have mentioned the steps to reserve your own .XXX domain names.

Reserve XXX Names

Step 1 : Go to ICM Registry and register for a free account if you don’t have.

Step 2 : After the basic Email Verification process, log into to your account. Now go to Reservation section.

You have the right to apply (on behalf of your customers) for domains in .xxx that they already own in .com, .net or another TLD, such as a country code TLD. This process is called Name Reservation. To do this, provide them with the existing domain(s) that you or your customers own.

You may submit as many domains, but only up to 1000 at a time using this form. Names must be entered one domain name per line. Enter ONLY the domain name, NOT in the form of a URL.

For Example…
domain1.com
domain2.net
domain3.org
Pre-Owned and Wish List

#Pre-Owned : If you wish to have domain.xxx for your domain.com or some other TLD, then use the “Pre-Owned” section of ICM registration to reserve .xxx names.

Example : If you already own domain.com, use the “Pre-owned” fields to reserve the name domain.xxx.

#Wish List : Use the “Wish List” fields to request name reservations for domains that you do not already own in other top-level domains.

Click “Submit” to submit the .xxx name reservation requests to ICM Registry.

Apart from brand names, domain names or the websites’ trademarks more than the web is also one supply of entrepreneurial discontent online. Many companies fight more than trademarks and domain names for the right to use these names online. Domains on-line are extremely essential. Without these domain names, there is now way for the computer to verify for the internet pages, and e-mail routers will find it impossible to facilitate the transmissions of correspondences.

This is the reason why domain names are handled like ‘gold’ online. But they are more than simply faces for companies on-line; they are names that can be directly connected for products and services online. And that’s why most online business owners are fighting more than the use of these domain name and on-line trademarks.

Here’s how domain assignment functions. Domains that may be selected online are divided into hierarchies, with dot.COM ad dot.NET because the leading hierarchies. Now other than this division, domain names might be divided according to the nation of origin, and every country continues to be categorized. For example, the leading level will probably be dot.CA for Canada.

Now the issue more than the representation of domain names happen in the 2nd level- the label that comes after the leading level domain title. For instance within the case of NBA.com, the 2nd level is NBA. This is where trademarks problems are centered online. Numerous legal questions are centered on this problem. The conflict on domain names arises when two or more companies or entities stake a claim on the 2nd level label.

For instance if two companies stake a declare on StoryBooks.com conflict starts here. The one correct way to resolve this is for one party to relent, and also to tweak the title of the second label, much more like storybooksforkids.com.

For any much more contemporary instance more than online domain title trademark issues, just check what happened to Mcdonalds.com. The first 1 to take this name is 1 author from a magazine working on content material on domain names. Since this was associated having a large quick meals chain, there were numerous ideas forwarded to the author. And before he returned the domain title to the fast meals chain, he asked for charitable donation coming through the business.

The domain title MTV was also the subject of conflicts online and offline. The name was initially registered by a previous staffer with the business. But when this employee left the company, the management made the decision to manage the domain name, and this resulted to legal actions and also the courts was made to determine.

Disputes of this type happen on-line. And with the dizzying quantity of companies trying to make their presence felt online, the probability of conflicts over domain names and trademarks for sites raises as well. This really is why it’s important that domain names should be evaluated and registered with the appropriate companies.

There are a number of sites exactly where domains may be searched and verified. And this is really a cost-effective move than waging a domain ownership war on-line.

The Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) has been adopted by ICANN-accredited registrars in all gTLDs (.aero, .asia, .biz, .cat, .com, .coop, .info, .jobs, .mobi, .museum, .name, .net, .org, .pro, .tel and .travel). Dispute proceedings arising from alleged abusive registrations of domain names (for example, cybersquatting) may be initiated by a holder of trademark rights. The UDRP is a policy between a registrar and its customer and is included in registration agreements for all ICANN-accredited registrars.

Domain tasting refers to the practice of registering up several domain names to test whether they receive type-in traffic and then dropping the domains that do not. This is possible because most domain registrars offer a 5 days refunding period.

Domain tasting is the practice of a domain name registrant using the five-day “grace period” (the Add Grace Period or AGP) at the beginning of the registration of an ICANN-regulated second-level domain to test the marketability of the domain. During this period, when a registration must be fully refunded by the domain name registry, a cost-benefit analysis is conducted by the registrant on the viability of deriving income from advertisements being placed on the domain’s website.

This practice should not affect the general public, but lately people are reporting that some domain search data is being sold to domain tasting companies. In other words, when you search for a certain domain someone might be collecting that information and selling it, possibly making you lose that domain.

The DailyDomainer has an interesting article titled “Who is monitoring your domain searches?“, outlining how domain tasting work and how one could protect himself against it. There are three simple tips to avoid losing a precious domain to tasters:

 1. Delay the search for domains until you are ready to purchase them
2. If one of your searched domains gets registered by a domain taster you should wait 5 days and check for availability again (make sure to not visit the domain during that period)
3. If you are in doubt about several domains buy them all, choose and then drop the ones that you will not use

People wonder why in Italy, the main backorder services do not use an auction system to let customers’ offers grow up. Currently offers are not known in advance and normally a user does not know how much other users have focused on a specific recovery. It’s not difficult to understand how this happens at the expense of the backorder service. No auctions means no stimulation of the price and the final result is a lower recovery price, comparing with what is normally carried out on a backorder.

This happens because Italian laws don’t permit this kind of auction, forcing domains recovery services to see their earnings decreasing.

On the other side, we have to admit that there are many web companies that strongly use backorder bidding mechanism to increase strongly their revenues. These companies are not established in Italy.

This is another reason why making a backorder in Italy is still so secure and affordable. It’s widely known that we can recover very interesting domains, due to the low competition among domainers.

However, very often this can also be seen as a problem. Many domainers are in fact not be able to bid and they have to lose a domain they were looking for, without having the possibility to invest more.

Waiting for a change and a opening in the laws, we are satisfied by the smart and cheap services offered by Italian domainers. We only bet from the beginning the money that we believe correspond to the value of the expiring domain, without having the ability to make any bids. Moreover, in a market still in a start’up phase as the Italian one, competition is still very low and doing businesses, when it comes to domains, are still quite easy.

ICANN formed in the year 1998 by the US federal government as not for profit organization, is given the role of managing internet’s functionality and TLD. The organization at present has an annual budget of six to eight million dollars (USD).

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN as it is called, is an organization functioning under the US federal government legislations. The organization is not meant to do any business or generate profits, but its main task is to manage the domain name registration, root server system functions, IP address space allocation. It is important to note here that prior to the formation of ICANN, all these administrative and managing activities were organized by US government and other subsidiary organizations under a contractual agreement. With ICANN, the role and responsibilities for managing the administrative functions like Domain Registration procedures have become organized.

Domain Name registration Approval by ICANN

The companies that are engaged in the business of offering authentic TLD registrations are scanned by ICANN professionals. The TLD registration service providers are the ones that provide registrations for the domains like .COM, .ORG and .NET respectively. The company which expresses the interest to become the ICANN-approved registrar has to go through a structured process, which begins with filling the application form. And for the rest of the web based companies who do not become ICANN-approved registrar will act as the reseller of the company that has the formal approval of ICANN.

ICANN’s Pivotal Role in Managing and Overseeing Internet Community

It is worth mentioning here that ICANN is playing the role organizing and managing the internet community. The organization has also been instrumental in legislating and regulating the norms for the Internet community, which has affected the websites and the online business industry in variety of ways. Other key strategic roles played by ICANN includes, protecting the operational stability of internet, encouraging the competition, formulating the policies through the private-sector consensus. It is also significant that ICANN was the organization who pioneered multi registrar system in the year 1999, just one year after its coming into existence.

As the ICANN Website translates – “ICANN is a premier organization which is formed by the union of reliable Internet communities like nonprofit advocacy groups, organizations, educators and many more.”

ICANN resolves Domain Registration Disputes

ICANN has played a key role in the formulation as wand implementation of unique policy for resolving major and minor disputes related to domain name registration. Under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), ICANN governs the Domain Registration procedures in case any dispute arises between two or more website owners having the same domain name.

The Domain Name System (DNS) currently used by the majority of Internet users isn’t the only one. Several groups operate alternative DNS roots. So how do they work and why are they in existence?

The Domain Name System acts as a huge location service; connecting devices that use the Internet such as home computers, cell phones and even appliances, to the relevant data source or service. DNS translates numbers known as IP addresses – unique pointers to services and sources – to human-readable names and vice versa.

DNS doesn’t exist solely on any single system; but on millions of servers around the world. However, there are a handful of what are known as “root” nameservers that have a critical role as being the first point of call for translating human readable names into IP addresses.

The official DNS root is overseen by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a body that also administers domain names accessible through the official DNS root – in other words, just about all name extensions we are familiar with.

ICANN is a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation with a global membership and states its primary goal as being dedicated to keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable. The body was formally established under the ICANN name in October 1998.

Alternative DNS roots have usually been started out by groups of individuals with a common concern relating to beliefs there are issues with the current DNS in terms of ICANN governance, security and choice.

Probably the most popular alternative DNS roots is OpenNIC, an organization run by hobbyists. It describes its activities as a “cooperative effort to provide a non-national, alternative Domain Name System that encompasses and expands upon the legacy Domain Name System.”

Aside from offering access to domain name extensions you may not have heard of such as.bbs,.free and.geek; people who use the system can also access.com,.net and all other Top Level Domain (TLD) and country code Top Level Domain (ccTLDs) name extensions approved by ICANN.

However, as most Internet connected computers aren’t properly set up to access alternative DNS roots; most users aren’t even aware of these additional domain extensions even exist. As such, since they can’t be accessed from a system with standard configuration, using one of these alternatives as a primary domain for business purposes would probably be an unwise move.

Additionally, most web hosting services don’t have the infrastructure in place to handle domain names offered by alternative DNS roots.

Yahoo acquired Delicious about five years ago. Late last year, the company announced that it was planning to shut down Delicious, along with several other poorly-performing services, after making nearly 600 layoffs. It warned that if no buyer appeared by this July, the unit would be closed.

Yahoo has sold social bookmarking site Delicious for $5 million, according to an unnamed source close to The Next Web. The sale has not yet been confirmed by Yahoo.

If it’s true, however, the news surprises nobody.

The Web made a big fuss back in December 2010 when an internal Yahoo products webcast leaked, revealing that Delicious was among a number of other services that Yahoo was preparing to “sunset.” The sunset is the end of the day, after all, so people interpreted the news as proof that Yahoo was simply closing the service, forcing five million users to find new social bookmarking digs.

In reality, it makes much more sense for a company suffering so much as Yahoo to try to make a little cash on the site before giving it up entirely. The company originally acquired Delicious back in 2005 for somewhere between $15 million and $30 million, so it’s not too serious a loss if the $5 million price point reported is confirmed.

Disco, which was released without great fanfare, has been created by Slide, the iPhone app developer start-up Google acquired for $182 million in August 2010.

The service is initially only available in the US, and surprisingly, the service is not yet available for Google Android. This could be because Slide is being run as an independent company under the Google umbrella.

Furnished with a minimalistic user interface, Disco allows users to create an account for their mobile numbers via Disco.com, a web domain acquired by Google for $250,000. Users can start sending text messages using the app or the online version after they have created various groups.

Users name their groups as they please and can add any mobile numbers they wish, upto a limit of 25. The user is given a single phone number which relates to a particular group, any text sent to that number will be delivered to the entire list of people.

The owner of each number receives a text message to inform them that their number has been added to a group text messaging list, along with the name of the group to which they have been assigned.

DomainSponsor was one of the first domain parking companies and monetizes millions of domain names. It is known for its text-only landing pages sporting taglines such as “What you need, when you need it”. The company pays monthly and uses a Google ad feed.

Domain Sponsor has been highly praised by most domain professionals. The service is monetized by Google and it a part of Oversee.net – the company behind the DomainFest conferences. Their system “automatically optimizes” your domains. Domain Sponsor sends out checks quickly and reliably. PayPal payments are now available too.

Domain Sponsor was one of the first PPC parking services that moved to a hybrid pay-per-click / pay-for-performance model. They no longer pay the same amount per click on a keyword – rather they attempt to analyze the “quality” of your traffic. This appears to mean that they want to know if visitors really buy stuff from the sites that they click through to. Now almost everyone does this.

Domain Sponsor allows you to create a site with custom graphics. You can also set whether the domain rotates between different landing pages or gives peope the same page every time.

Domain Sponsor’s “auto optimization” process starts with semantically constructed generic search page that keeps track of what people search for and click on. These links eventually migrate to the main page. The process works quickest for high-traffic domains. You also have the ability to add or remove keywords. The have upgraded their processes several times. It is now possible to get graphic-rich pages that will rotate with the more generic pages for the system to see which pages earn more revenue.

AdSense for Domins or AFD is a parking service from Google. AFD began in December of 2008. AFD was originally only open to North American AdSense accounts but is now available in the UK and many other countries. You can display ads from Google on your parked domains.

Advertising Feed – Google uses their own adverting feed (supposedly cutting out the middle man).

Templates – Simple templates and AFD has many less features then other parking companies.

Custom Content – No. You cannot add custom text or pictures to your AFD sites.

Titles and Meta Tags – No you cannot add your own titles or meta tags. Google inserts a “No Index / No Follow” meta tag on your pages so search engines will not index your parking pages. Google wants type-in traffic from domains.

Allows Adult Names – Adult sites are not allowed.

Mass Modify – No.

Earnings – Some of our names are doing well but many have lower earning than names at other parking companies. Under Google’s TOS publishers are not allowed to reveal specific CPM, CTR data or the Adsense earnings amounts.

Payment Methods: Check, EFT or Electronic Fund Transfer, Western Union Quick Cash and Rapida. AFD does not offer a PayPal option. $100 minimum to be paid.

Statistics – Not as good as other parking companies. Only gives the number of impressions and your earnings.

Selling Names – No. You cannot sell names or add a for sale link or message on your AFD parking pages.

Customer Service – Google has a help section and forums for AdSense related questions.

Affilate Program – No. Google ended the AdSense referral program in August 2008.

Approval – You must be approved for an AdSense account to use AFD. To qualify for AdSense you must have a website and be at least 18 years old. If you don’t have a website you can create one at Google’s Sites or start a blog at Blogger to sign up for AdSense.

Namedrive doesn’t require a minimum to sign up and is the easiest of all to get with. You can sign up and park domains in minutes. You can choose from LOTS of templates from Namedrive and customize them. Like I said, before exploring other parking providers, sign up with Namedrive! The rest usually require a portfolio quality check. They also provide Geo-Ads. This means that users in a country should see ads that are targeted for them. This helps increase CTR and in the end makes you money. A cool feature provided also shows you what your traffic is searching for. This is extremely helpful in optimizing for keywords that will get you a higher CTR. You also get stats about what continent your traffic is coming from… so if a majority is coming from Asia and you are optimized for North America (English), you might want to reconsider your optimization techniques.

Just after Japanese disaster got live on TV screens and computer terminals around the world on Friday, Internet users have rushed to register domain names with words like “Japan” or “Japanese,” often coupled with “tsunami” or “earthquake,” or “quake,” other frequent words include “help,”, “give,” “donate,” “build,” hope,” “care,” “rebuild,” “victims,” “needs” and “relief.”

Most of these domains are not functional with unique content but are parked , Federal Bureau of Investigation said it found that “many” of 4,000 new web sites talking up relief services proved to be fake , After Hurricane Katrina came.

Another example is when big earthquake hit Haiti , there were lots of domains registered with “Haiti” coupled with “earthquake,” or “quake,” other frequent words include “help,” “donate,” “rebuild,” “victims,” and “relief.” , One Georgia man who served federal prison for fraud had registered four Web addresses for Haiti disaster.

A recurring discussion within certain circles over the years has been the potential assignment of single character domain names in the generic top-level domains (gTLDs). Prior to the formation of ICANN, and despite assignment of a few single character domain names (q.com, x.com, z.com, i.net, q.net, and x.org), single character domain names had been reserved and rendered unregistrable. The historical reasons for this reservation are sometimes debated, but it is universally recognized that there is no valid technical reason for them to remain unregistrable.

The subject of allocating single character domain names has captured the attention of the ICANN community to varying degrees from time to time, primarily depending on the interested efforts of Overstock.com and its advocates. For example, just prior to the December 2005 ICANN meeting in Vancouver, a press release was circulated, and its authors managed to pimp their claim that ICANN was weighing the release of single character domain names to a variety of media outlets (e.g. ICANN weighs single-letter Web addresses USA Today, November 28, 2005). During the 2005 Vancouver meeting, one of the more interesting exhibit tables was run by Overstock.com, for the purpose of distributing baseball caps embroidered with the letter “O”, apparently for the purpose of impressing on the minds of the ICANN community that Overstock.com claims a pre-eminent interest in the letter “O” – and apparently oblivious to the fact that Oakley has longstanding rights in the mark “O” for sportswear. Hence, while rumors spread that Oprah was coming to visit ICANN, the presence of blatant trademark infringement at an ICANN meeting by a member of the Business Constituency was, at least, entertaining.

In October 2007, ICANN initiated a public comment process on the allocation of these domain names, in which a number of commentators suggested the use of auctions as an allocation method. On January 18, 2008, ICANN announced that it was seeking “Expressions of Interest from Auction Design Experts” (http://www.icann.org/announcements/announcement-18jan08.htm) for, among other things, “allocation of single-character second-level domain names”. Accordingly, it appears that ICANN is moving toward an auction model for the allocation of these domain names.

Among the various auction proposals submitted during the public comment period was one by, surprise, Overstock.com which contained the curious caveat that .”The names should be allocated via a process that respects established/prior use, with an established set of criteria.”

“Respects established/prior use”? Of domain names that have never been allocated? Whatever could that mean?

Well, as ICANN lurches toward collecting fistfuls of cash from the sale of domain names, it’s probably about time that someone explain the game that has been going on during the discussion of single-character domain names.

We are all familiar with the concept of cybersquatting – i.e. the abusive and intentional registration of domain names for the purpose of exploiting trademark rights known to belong to another party. What has become significant in the last several years, largely due to the solicitous treatment of trademark claims in domain policy development is the notion that a claim of trademark rights operates as an automatic entitlement to a domain name. For example, prior to the launch of new top-level domain names, various sorts of pre-emptive procedures for conferring a registration preference upon trademark owners have become common. This general practice has given rise to strategic gaming of various trademark systems.

One of my favorite examples of this sort of gaming was the filing, in the US, of a trademark application for the term “PAINT.BIZ” by a large paint company prior to the launch of .biz. During the subsequent trademark dispute procedure that was applied to the .biz TLD, and because some of the retired judges used to decide these disputes have no basic understanding of the difference between a pending application and an enforcible trademark right, this paint company leveraged their pending trademark application into a claim of entitlement to the domain name paint.biz, and prevailed. Never mind that the underlying application was refused by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and then subsequently abandoned. The application served its purpose. Not inclined to wait for the preferred treatment offered to trademark owners, Sun Microsystems had its attorney pre-emptively threaten the .biz registry with litigation if it so much as thought of registering “Sun.biz” to any other party (presumably including any of the other trademark claimants to “SUN”).

Similarly, prior to the launch of the European “.eu” top-level domain name, quite a number of folks, including domain speculators, learned the apparent lesson taught by misguided and oversimplified trademark protection policies applied to domain names. By the thousands, astute observers rushed into the Benelux trademark office, which was identified as being the most rapid route to obtaining an entry pass into the preferred round of domain registrations run for trademark claimants by the .eu registry. The result – by the time the registry was opened for general public registration, there was not a valuable dictionary word to be had.

So, what does this have to do with ICANN proposing to auction single character domain names, and Overstock.com / Marilyn Cade’s urgings that such a process respect “established/prior use”. The answer is – everything. The discussion of single character domain names has proceeded for several years now, with nary a nod to the fun and games that have been transpiring in the United States Patent and Trademark Office and, likely indeed, various other trademark registration authorities around the world.

Whether or not ICANN decides to auction the allocation of single letter domain names, there is going to be a line of trademark claimants doing what trademark claimants do best – shouting “me first” and threatening litigation because, yes, they believe they “own” individual letters of the alphabet concatenated with “.com”. And, I promise you this – because domain policy makers have historically been absolutely ignorant to the manner in which trademarks function as identifiers in connection with specific goods and services, and are not “monopolies in words”, those shouts will be heard.

Assembled in Table 1 below, are the currently pending or registered applications for registration of trade or service marks consisting of single character “.com” domain name strings. I have listed the filing dates of these applications in the table, because it is absolutely remarkable how many people discovered, and then swore to a government agency, that they had a bona fide intention to use such marks, all within a few days of one another, and all within days of the USA Today article inspired by the press release circulated in 2005 by those who have been trying to shake the tree for these domain names to be released.

Qatar became one of the first countries in the world to offer Arabic domain names to Internet users as ictQatar officials launched the Qatar Domains Registry, making the Internet more accessible to Arabic customers.
The first phase of the introduction of the Qatar Domains Registry (QDR) will see select organisations allocated Qatar-specific Internet domain names, with general domain names to be made available to the public by August of this year.

A number of sites are currently being used as pilots for the system, including Hukoomi and ictQatar, while other government organisations and registered trademark and IP holders will be launching in the near future.
Chief technical manager at ictQatar, Salah al-Kuwari emphasised the importance of the launch to local users: “The launch of the Qatar Domains Registry is a major milestone as we work to build a more digitally inclusive society.”

President and CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ICANN, Rod Beckstrom gave a presentation to mark the launch of the domain registry, and congratulated ictQatar on the “historic achievement” marked by the launch of .qatar ‏

Beckstrom spoke about the challenges faced by his organisation, attempting to maintain a global network when so many billions of domain names are accessed on a daily basis.

With 1mn new devices going online every day, the scale of the Internet is quite remarkable, and Qatar has not missed out on the growth of the global network.

In fact, Beckstrom explained that Qatar is among the top three internet using nations in the Middle East with 52% of people here online, 50% penetration of broadband services in households, and 167% mobile connectivity penetration.

He explained that the launch of Qatar’s domain registry will have multiple benefits, encouraging creativity and innovation, increasing convenience and consumer choice and also supporting pride in Qatar’s cultural identity

“Approval of Qatar’s internationalised domain name (IDN) is an acknowledgement of the country’s vision and leadership, he said, adding “in pursuing the IDN on behalf of its people Qatar has recognised that the Internet is the way of the future.”

Users will be able to check the availability of domain names through the QDR website, which officials said would be launched in the near future.

They will then be able to register their domains with the QDR, and al-Kuwari explained that existing domains will experience no difficulties with the launch of the new registry.

The launch of the QDR has been a long time in planning, and officials explained that ictQatar led the application process for the IDN, the country code top level domain (ccTLD) and assisted with the fasttrack process with ICANN for approval, officially receiving delegation of the domains in December 2010.

“Country-specific domain names are an incredibly valuable national commodity. To maximise their reach and value, QDR was developed based on a registry-registrar system, where approved registrars will be able to attract numerous local and international registrars to promote competition in the market and provide choices for consumers,” added al-Kuwari.

Fusu is the world’s first Domains Stock Exchange , Fusu allows domain owners to sell up to 45% of their names to investors. It starts with an “Initial Domain Offering” (IDO), the equivalent to an IPO on Wall Street. Investors buy up shares, and that money goes directly to the domain owner. From there, the shares are owned by individual investors, who can then buy and sell them at an agreed on price, which in turn changes the valuation of the domain name. Once the domain owner sells the domain (gets acquired) shareholders get the acquisition price – presumably higher than the current market value that has been set by the Fusu trading community. Similar to an online brokerage account, Fusu provides tools for tracking your investments and getting quotes for domain names.

This is a TLD for companies, organizations, and individuals based in the region of Asia, Australia, and the Pacific.

.biz

This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register; however, registrations may be challenged later if they are not held by commercial entities in accordance with the domain’s charter. This TLD was created to provide relief for the wildly-popular .com TLD.

.cat

This is a TLD for Web sites in the Catalan language or related to Catalan culture.

.com

This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register. Though originally intended for for-profit business entities, for a number of reasons it became the “main” TLD for domain names and is currently used by all types of entities including nonprofits, schools and private individuals. Domain name registrations may be challenged if the holder cannot prove an outside relation justifying reservation of the name, to prevent “squatting”.

.coop

The .coop TLD is limited to cooperatives as defined by the Rochdale Principles.

.edu

The .edu TLD is limited to specific educational institutions such as, but not limited to, primary schools, middle schools, secondary schools, colleges, and universities. In the US, it’s usability was limited in 2001 to post-secondary institutions accredited by an agency on the list of nationally recognized accrediting agencies maintained by the United States Department of Education. This domain is therefore almost exclusively used by U.S. colleges and universities. Some institutions that do not meet the current registration criteria have grandfathered domain names.

.gov

The .gov TLD is limited to governmental entities and agencies.

.info

This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register.

.int

The .int TLD is strictly limited to organizations, offices, and programs which are endorsed by a treaty between two or more nations.

.jobs

The .jobs TLD is designed to be added after the names of established companies with jobs to advertise. At this time, owners of a “company.jobs” domain are not permitted to post jobs of third party employers.

.mil

The .mil TLD is limited to use by the U.S. military.

.mobi

Must be used for mobile-compatible sites in accordance with standards.

.museum

Must be verified as a legitimate museum.

.name

This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register; however, registrations may be challenged later if they are not by individuals (or the owners of fictional characters) in accordance with the domain’s charter.

.net

This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register. Originally intended for use by domains pointing to a distributed network of computers, or “umbrella” sites that act as the portal to a set of smaller websites.

.org

This is an open TLD; any person or entity is permitted to register. Originally intended for use by non-profit organizations, and still primarily used by same.

.pro

.tel
